151 Clarence Street, Sydney - Precinct Activation

Barrack Place is an 18-storey, A-Grade commercial address at the gateway to the emerging western corridor of Sydney’s Central Business District. The precinct bounded by York, King, Kent and Erskine Streets includes several significant heritage items and retains elements of the traditional warehouse quarter of Central Sydney. A network of laneways defines the highly permeable ground plane with through-site links, boutique commercial and small retail tenancies.

Post Covid, 151 Clarence struggled with a lack of activation, due to there being an absence of an F&B anchor and a cold external environment that is not conducive to longer dwell time.

Scope Projects were invited in to recommend a pathway of simple enhancements, on a limited budget. We introduced ARUP Lighting design team led by Rebecca Cadorin to produce a master plan of activations that can gradually be introduced over a period of time.
Stage 1 design intent was to foster greater activation through lighting interventions to provide a welcoming and cohesive experience for visitors.

A key focus is the activation in the courtyard, it needed to spark interest, draw people in while being warm and inviting, encouraging visitors to come in and spend more time within the precinct.

The implemented design seized the opportunity to light up architectural elements, engage the semi-reflective ceiling material into the laneway and bring human scale to the vast space, linking Clarence and Kent.
The use of warm welcoming white light and introduction of festoon / catenary lighting above the new courtyard furniture has created a space adaptable to use, day and night.
